Wings over Nazeing

Volumes one and two

This couple of books have come to us for production and marketing and quite frankly they are "flying" out the door!

This pair of well manufactured books are a history of the Broxbourne Aerodrome and the Herts and Essex Aero club. With pictures and a well written script these books are very popular with people in the area and also in the know as far as the Aerodrome goes.

The appeal is also very strong to anyone with an interest in the war era flying machines or simply the history of aviation.

The books are £35 for the pair.

Postage for the books is £8 in the UK and £15 overseas

Leslie Kimm, a twin was born in Enfield Highway, Middlesex, the family moving to Nazeing when he was just a year and a half old.

Aeroplanes have always played a major role in his life as from the age of three he was a witness to the opening and development of Broxbourne Aerodrome in Nazeing, Essex.

Aged Fourteen he started work at the aerodrome in the Easter of 1941, and began his career in aviation, working on various types of aircraft, both of wooden and metal construction.

Called up early in 1945 he served for three years as a wireless operator in the royal Corps of Signals, most of that time in the middle East.

On release Leslie returned to Broxbourne as a ground Engineer with the now reformed Herts and Essex Aero Club. Whist there he learnt to Fly, and obtained his pilots “A” licence and Aviators Certificate in September 1948. Later that year he joined the de Havilland aircraft company at Hatfield as a service engineer on early jet aircraft completing forty three years service, retiring in 1992 as a principal project engineer for British Aerospace.

He is married with two sons, both working in aviation .

WINGS OVER NAZEING
by
Leslie A. Kimm

The publication of this comprehensive and entertaining book (in Two Volumes) covers the entire history and development of Broxbourne Aerodrome and the Herts and Essex Aero Club from 1929 to March 1954 when it was finally closed down.

The two volumes are available at £19.99 retail each, they are hardback format in the two colours of the club itself, with colour dust jackets, beautifully printed on High grade Paper, illustrated mainly Black and White with some colour plates also.

While the Aerodrome is a part of local history integral to East Hertfordshire and a place which touched the lives of many it is only now after 10 years of research that its history has been brought to life, written and compiled with the care and attention to detail that only some one who worked and flew there could do. Although designated "Broxbourne Aerodrome, Herts", it was actually sited in Nazeing, inside the Essex border.

It was officially opened on Sunday, 14th June 1931 by Amy Johnson, at a time when flying was becoming popular. Amy, famous for her solo flight to Australia, and other flights, often visited Broxbourne and later became the club's president.

The two volumes describe all the various activities of the club: learning to Fly, Flying Competitions, Air Displays, Air Touring, Air Charter, "Joy Flights", social activities etc.

Volume One contains the pre-war story as well as the lesser known wartime role of repairing, rebuilding, modifying, and test flying of R.A.F. aircraft. There is also a chapter on the " London Busmen’s, Flying Club".

The two volumes contain in total over 700 photographs, drawings and sketches, many of them published for the first time.
